The History of The Internet
One of the most impressive developments of 1971 was the start of Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg, for those unfamiliar with the site, is a global effort to make books and documents in the public domain available electronically–for free–in a variety of eBook and electronic formats.
It began when Michael Hart gained access to a large block of computing time and came to the realization that the future of computers wasn’t in computing itself, but in the storage, retrieval and searching of information that, at the time, was only contained in libraries. He manually typed (no OCR at the time) the "Declaration of Independence" and launched Project Gutenberg to make information contained in books widely available in electronic form. In effect, this was the birth of the eBook.

Mobile Internet Usage on the Rise
Mobile Internet usage is on the rise. Apple’s share of the mobile smartphone market is only going to increase. AT&T’s mobile data traffic has increased by 4,932% over the last three years. There will be over 1 billion “heavy mobile data users” by 2013.Technorati Tags: mobile internet, mobile, iphone, mashable, web, statistics
These are just some of the stats that were shared with the audience at the Web 2.0 Summit today in San Francisco. Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker led a speedy and high-charged presentation over Internet trends. The data and stats packed in her 68 page presentation is nothing short of mind-boggling.
The focus of her presentation this year (she gives this rapid-fire speech every year at Web 2.0) was on Mobile Internet and 8 key trends that Morgan Stanley has identified, including that social networking + mobile are driving big changes in communication and commerce.

Habitforge: Change Your Habits
Technorati Tags: good habits, bad habits, habits, habitforge, new site, web site, techIt is said that it takes 21 consequent days to develop a habit. In other words; if you manage to hold out that long, you’ve practically made it.
Habitforge puts that rule to use, and helps you to make new habits or with managing away bad habits. It’s a site everyone can use to make that little tweak to their daily routine. The concept is very simple; report of your daily successes and failures until you manage to cross that 21 day mark. All you need is an internet browser and email address.

Future Apple Products
Technorati Tags: apple, products, future, mac life, technology, techApple watchers are well aware that the company is planning to release some sort of tablet computer, and given Apple’s recent history of making surprise announcements, that could very well happen between the day we put this issue to bed and the day you read this article. But what if the tablet rumors are bunkum? And even if the tablet is announced, what comes next? Jaw-dropping products can take years to develop, and Apple surely has tablet-eclipsing wonders brewing in its labs.
For answers, we turned to five tech journalists, people who follow Apple every day and are straight-A students of its products. Each expert was asked to fill out the same worksheet, wherein we requested details on the features, specs, wow elements, and essential “Appleness” of the gear they envision Apple making. We then took their worksheets and turned their ideas into the fully rendered fauxtotypes you see on the following pages. We did our best to stay faithful to our experts’ visions, but sometimes we did add elements of our own. But, of course, this entire little game is an exercise in interpretation: We asked our experts to interpret Apple’s magic mojo, and then we interpreted what our experts gave us. We hope we served our experts well.

F.lux to Help Nerds Sleep
Technorati Tags: f.lux, circadian rythm, sleep, help sleeping, lcd dimmer, lcd screen, night, day, software, applicationA couple of months ago, Varun wrote about a very interesting yet controversial application. Since then, a lot has been learnt and the app has come quite a long way. I’ll attempt to review the app again but this time, I’m testing the Mac version and I’ll try to look to it from a totally different perspective from he did. First, let me start off with a little background.
You must be familiar with modern LCD screens, right? If you look carefully, most of them have a button to automatically change the attributes of the screen to adjust for the types of media which is being viewed: one specially tweaked for movies, another for photos, a separate one for text and there’s one we’re particularly interested about — night.
You see, working in front of a computer screen at night raises a particular concern. The fact that you’re staring at a bright screen late at night when your body is supposed to be turning in, disrupts your circadian rhythm. A bit of medical jargon coming your way — during nighttime, darkness permits the production of melatonin by the pineal gland. Melatonin causes drowsiness and in tandem with the central nervous system, controls the circadian rhythm. In layman’s term, all this means is the bright light from the LCD screen screws up your sleep-wake cycle.
That’s why there’s a customized “Night” setting on your LCD. Furthermore, there are several apps that will reduce the brightness of your screen while working at night; Shades is one example of a Mac app that will do just that. I don’t know if you’ve noticed the LCD’s reflection off a person’s face at night — it’s mostly bluish white. Technically, the specific colour temperature is 6500K; also known as daylight. That’s right. If you find it hard to fall asleep after using your computer, this is why.
F.lux addresses this issue but it does it slightly differently. Instead of reducing brightness per se, it actually warms the colours you see on your screen and imitates the lighting in the room during nighttime. It’s quite hard to wrap your head around until you actually use it but I’ll do my best to try and explain it.

Vote for your favorite mobile app
The mobile space has blown up exponentially in the past year. The CTIA semi-annual wireless industry survey was released a few weeks ago and it included some mind-blowing numbers. 4.1 billion SMS messages are being sent daily, and there are now over 276 million wireless users in the US. And Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker gave a recent presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit showing that the mobile web is taking over the world.Technorati Tags: mobile, mobile web, mobile app, iphone, vote
Whatever your feelings about the iPhone, it’s almost impossible to dismiss the notion that Apple introduced the idea of smartphones and always-on mobile connectivity to the masses. And while not the first makers of a mobile marketplace, they were the first to capitalize on creating a developer ecosystem to bring thousands of applications to iPhone owners. Apple’s iPhone also contributed to the astronomical rise in AT&T’s mobile data traffic, which is up 4,932% from three years ago.
Now we live in a world where there are countless mobile applications and markets which include the Ovi store and the Android Marketplace, the latter of which will become even more important as more and more carriers release phones running the Android operating system. By Reuters account, Google Android is forecasted to take over the number two spot in the smartphone market by 2012.
Regardless of your carrier or mobile device, you’re clearly turning to the mobile web and using mobile applications more than ever before.

Quick Pitch: Penzu is a free online diary and personal journal with a focus on privacy. Securely record your thoughts and ideas with the ease of writing on a pad of paper.
Genius Idea: A big part of blogging has always been about sharing your thoughts with others, but sometimes, you really just want to record your thoughts and keep them private — like you would in a traditional paper journal. Penzu brings the paper-journal experience (and aesthetic) to the web and offers private-entry by default and the ability to protect your entries with a password or high-level encryption.

7 Google Labs Features That Help Us Avoid Email Mistakes
“A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history – with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila.”Technorati Tags: tech, google, google labs, gmail, email, mistakes
~ Mitch Radcliffe (technology journalist)
That’s spot on. The Delete key is dangerous but we have Recycle Bin/Undo/Trash to help us bounce back. What sometimes seems even more deadly is the Send button under our quicksilver cursor. Making errors in email is not solely about grammatical errors or sending it to a non-existent address (though the former should also be unpardonable). Far more serious gaffes exist and we can all take to the stand on that.
How many times have we sent an email to the wrong guy? At least – once. How many times have we forgotten to include someone in the mail? Many times over! The end result may or may not be as bad as with handguns or as embarrassing as a tequila high, but email mistakes are unprofessional (and can be potentially a huge blow).
The good thing about Gmail is that the boffins in Google Labs have their empathy hat on. They know that foot-in-the-mouth disease is becoming quite common in the online world too, thanks to rapid tools like email and Twitter. That’s why Gmail has quite a few Google Labs email features inbuilt to prevent such errors.
We have brought up some of the features previously mentioned in a couple of Google Labs feature posts. Maybe, this one will help to put all of them on a common thread. Let’s start with two of the latest ones on the experimental block.
To access the Google Labs email features, click on the little green beaker icon at the top right.
1.Don’t Forget Bob
Who’s Bob? It could be your friend or your boss. But actually in Gmail it’s the new name for the old ‘Add More Recipients’. It’s Google’s way of suggesting adding guys you might have missed while filling your address fields. Click on Enable and it might help you avoid a bit of heartburn from ignored friends while emailing important announcements.

Give Work
Technorati Tags: give work, iphone, app, technology, refugeesFor the last few months, Mashable has been exploring the potential of social media for Social Good. We have seen the power of Twitter and Facebook utilized to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity (and to potentially raise $1 million to fight cancer).
But now we’ve learned of another use of social media for social good, and it does not involve raising money for charity. This morning, the Give Work iPhone app (iTunes Link) became available in the app store.
It’s a joint project between crowdsourcing platform CrowdFlower and the non-profit Samasource, a graduate of this year’s Facebook Fund class, whose goal is to train the less fortunate in Africa and elsewhere in quality assurance so that they can get work and make a living, while providing valuable data to real companies.
Pretend you’re Image Company Corporation, and you need to verify that A) a set of 10,000 images are of trees and that B) none of them are copyrighted. You could just look through all 10,000 with your own team, but they’re probably going to be more productive on higher level tasks.
So you send your task to CrowdFlower and Samasource. They place the task in the Give Work iPhone app. Then Kenyan refugees trained by Samasource do the image checks from a datacenter. And to assure quality and accuracy, an American iPhone user double-checks their work and verifies the refugee’s work. Now you have provided work for Kenyan refugees while providing value to the company (by lowering their costs).

Now these guys have the coolest job...
It's a Tuesday night in Hamilton, Ontario, and I'm sitting with Myrcurial (aka James Arlen) talking about makers, hackers' activism and hyperlocal journalism. Myrcurial is an online security consultant, a dyed-in-the-wool hacker and the wise-old-man of think|haus, a hacker/maker workshop that's being constructed around us as we sit in an ex-autoparts outlet in the northend of town.Technorati Tags: gadgets, computers, science,
Myrcurial and think|haus are part of the maker movement in Canada. If the movement has a bible, it's Make Magazine -- a publication that extols the virtues of using circuits and a grab-bag of Home Depot parts to make a potato cannon, a self-watering garden or a microprocessor robot rat.
Makers love Mythbusters, McGyver, old copies of Popular Science and Popular Electronics, 8-bit computer graphics and the chance to crack open and breathe new life into consumer electronics. Their motto is: "If you can't open it, you don't own it." They have excellent skills.
"We like to bend gadgets and circuits to our will," Myrcurial says. "We aren't interested in what we're told something can do, or must do. We're interested in making it do what we want, extending its life, giving it new purpose."

We can send SMS messages for free, or for a very low price by utilizing the magic power of the internet.
The only downside with this is that you have to be sitting in front of a computer, unless of course you have one of those hi-tech phones with internet capabilities.
So where are these free SMS services hiding? We’ll expose them now. Here are 10 great sites to send free text messages to cell phones (SMS).

BBQ by Remote
For the person that is extremely committed to their grilling, I’m sure top of the line accessories are the absolute only option. However, if you’re fairly casual about your grilling, but would still like some grilling accessories to make your life easier, this affordable gadget could be a big help. It will allow for you to grill without being tied right next to it. There have been other remote BBQ thermometers, but this is by far the most affordable one I’ve come across.
There was a talking thermometer posted here on Coolest Gadgets, but it will cost you $70. Whereas this much more simple version of the gadget will only cost you $19.95. It’s a big price difference, especially when both gadgets still do the same thing. One just happens to have a lot more tricks and other fancy extras. This Remote BBQ Thermometer also includes a timer and will monitor your food up to 100 feet away.

Personal Protection Feature - Defendingwomen.com
I just wanted a simple can of mace or pepper spray in my hand when I go to my car late at night. I feel safer having some deterrent with me. I thought it would be simple to buy one but it turned out to be difficult: so many choices, so many vendors. Brand after brand, feature after feature I got buried in the pile of numbers to compare and was completely confused what pepper spray to buy. Plus, I really hated that all vendors tried to scare me first, posting stories about rapes and mugging and how girls get abused. Would you shop on the site that greet you with a horrid photo of a beaten-up woman's face? I sure did not! Is there a vendor who sells self-defense gadgets to women, who has a friendly website, who does not overwhelm you with numbers and features and cheers you up? It turned out there are few of those. Check them out: DefendingWomen.com, Womenonguard.com, DefenseMakeSense.com.
Feel free to check them out but I liked DefendingWomen the most because the website was very friendly for women, they had the best prices and a lot of advice on how to use it. The best of all was their pricing when you buy pepper spray: if you buy 2 cans - the price drops, if 3 - even lower. They say you need one can to practice and they are absolutely right. Buying pepper spray in bulk?Lucky you, you'll get it very cheap. DefendingWomen also have many coupons and gifts sprinkled on their pages. I like DefendingWomen.com a lot, it's worth you visit!

Go Freestyle with New Coke Dispenser
Called the Freestyle, this high-tech soda fountain was created by Coca-Cola and software corporation Bsquare. With its touchscreen user interface and "highly concentrated flavor cartridges," the Freestyle saves space ordinarily taken up by traditional fountains' bulky dispenser box and containers of syrup and carbonated water. After punching a few on-screen buttons, one of over 100 beverages is poured into your expectant glass. Even more recipes, the video promises, are available for download. So, go ahead. Plug up that machine and pour yourself a lime-flavored Coke Classic or a raspberry-flavored Diet Coke. You can even play a drinking game; take a sip every time ol' Spinal Tap dude blinks. Just be prepared to wait a while.

Sony's Newest Portable Gamer
If you want to quickly understand Sony’s PSP Go ($250, coming Oct. 1), just think of the rule of two. Compared with the regular PSP, it is 50 percent smaller, but it costs costs twice as much as Nintendo’s DS, which is outselling it by 100 percent. The new form factor is twice as cool as the older, more clunky PSP 3000, meaning you’re also twice as likely to make room for one next to your phone.Technorati Tags: sony, gaming, portable, ds, nintendo
At the center of Sony’s PSP thinking is Media Go, Sony’s iTunes-like content manager. Once it is installed on your Windows computer you can drag and drop your movies, songs and videos onto the Go’s 16 gigabytes of memory, while archiving big files, like movies or games, on your computer’s hard drive. Like an iPod or MP3 player, you’ll be able to sync the PSP Go using a optional cradle.
What about that UMD disk collection sitting on the shelf? According to Al de Leon, manager of public relations for Sony Computer Entertainment America, “Sony and our publishing partners are looking into the opportunity to offer downloadable versions of games previously released on UMD.” In addition, all UMD titles made starting Oct. 1 will have a download equivalent. Reading between the line, the UMD was a battery-burning dud that Sony had to dump.
Here are some more PSP Go notes. For other E3 news from Sony this year, read this article, or check out the discussion boards at Playstation.com.

Personal Protection - Stun Gun Supply
Consumers have been buying TASERs for their own protection for several years. Now a new high tech model has filtered down from the police ranks. The patrolman's favorite, the TASER X26, is now available for citizens to buy as the TASER model X26C.
It not only looks like the police version, it has many of the features too. Like the police model, it is lightweight and software upgradeable. The consumer model has a 15 feet maximum throw, while the police version can go up to 30 feet. The X26C has a 30 second on cycle, enough time to run away. The police model has a shorter cycle because law enforcement quickly move in to apprehend the suspect. The TASER can be used like a stun gun in a close-up encounter.
This is the first consumer TASER to feature a sophisticated readout of vital information. You can track battery level, energy remaining on the digital power magazine and time in use. The TASER contains all the safety controls that all TASERs contain such as serialized paper tags. Twenty to thirty of these tags deploy during an actual TASER activation. Law enforcement can later retrieve this confetti from the scene and contact TASER International to get the name of the owner of the TASER device, allowing police to track any potential misuse. That's one reason new owners must register their product with TASER International.

LazyMan™ - Technology for Your Lawn
The aeration portion of LazyMan Liquid Gold™ is a uniquely formulated high grade non-ionic lawn aerator. It helps reduce crusting, loosens up hard clay soils, aggregates sandy soil, and allows water and oxygen to better reach plant roots by reducing the surface tension between the water and the soil. LazyMan Liquid Gold™ is designed to decrease the surface tension between water and soil while improving the growth and activity of micro-organisms necessary for a healthy soil environment. Best of all, it is so easy to use even a Lazy Man can do it!
Using a lawn aerator is one of the keys to healthy grass growth. It permits essential water, air and nutrients to penetrate deep into the root zone (where they are needed). The deeper healthier root systems created generate thicker, greener grass. The enhanced functioning of the soils natural organic processes means that there is reduced need for fertilization.

Sculpture: Bounce by Ronald A. Westerhuis
Words from the artist about the piece:
It started 10 years ago.
After a search through the world, seven years of travel.
Starting a career in the offshore world.
Oilrigs, heavy structures and massive pieces of stainless steel.
After going through the first experimental forms, shapes and material, I have found my way.
Working with stainless steel, a metal as cold, hard, indestructible as vulnerable and sensitive, a
medium full of character inviting to touch.
I create sculptures as elements of positive energy on its surrounding.
Lines, balance, gravity, finishing and new techniques are explored in my work.
Driven by the power of sculptures, I am constantly in search of the ultimate shape and
dimension.
As, “The Angel of the North”, “The Arch of St Louise”, “The Eiffel Tower” but also the pyramids,
I want to create and build landmarks.
Landmark as a traditional form of recognition for its beholder, economical boost, pride of
cities, nations and one day planets.
Looking at science, industry and architecture which reach for the highest possible.
“Travelling, stainless steel and art are reasons for my existence."
“Everything concerning my contact with the world can be traced back to emotions and philosophy."
“Without starting points and not searching for an ideal, I don't believe in boundaries."
“By placing my sculptures I find my way to peace and the future."
“Considering my sculptures as silent status, indestructibly dated.”
