Sculpture: Bounce by Ronald A. Westerhuis

Amazing Sculpture by artist Ronald A. Westerhuis

Words from the artist about the piece:

It started 10 years ago.
After a search through the world, seven years of travel.
Starting a career in the offshore world.
Oilrigs, heavy structures and massive pieces of stainless steel.
After going through the first experimental forms, shapes and material, I have found my way.
Working with stainless steel, a metal as cold, hard, indestructible as vulnerable and sensitive, a
medium full of character inviting to touch.
I create sculptures as elements of positive energy on its surrounding.
Lines, balance, gravity, finishing and new techniques are explored in my work.

Driven by the power of sculptures, I am constantly in search of the ultimate shape and
dimension.
As, “The Angel of the North”, “The Arch of St Louise”, “The Eiffel Tower” but also the pyramids,
I want to create and build landmarks.
Landmark as a traditional form of recognition for its beholder, economical boost, pride of
cities, nations and one day planets.
Looking at science, industry and architecture which reach for the highest possible.

Quotes from Westerhuis:

“Travelling, stainless steel and art are reasons for my existence."

“Everything concerning my contact with the world can be traced back to emotions and philosophy."

“Without starting points and not searching for an ideal, I don't believe in boundaries."

“By placing my sculptures I find my way to peace and the future."

“Considering my sculptures as silent status, indestructibly dated.”

Father's Day Gagdet, Gift Ideas

Father's Day is this Sunday, June 21. My husband is a self-proclaimed Gadget Guy and loves to get new little toys to play with. If the special dad in your life is the same way, here are some cool gadget toys that I stumbled upon that just may make this the best Father's Day ever! Warning - these toys ain't always cheap!

Garmin Forerunner 405CX: This is on my husband's wish list, and sadly, he'll keep wishing for it. This $370 watch is a dream come true for runners. It tracks your heart rate, time, distance, calories burned, your pace, is waterproof, and may even do your taxes. Ok, it won't do that. But it does download all that information onto your computer and lets you track your progress. Very cool - if you like that kind of thing.

Robogames

Robogames, "world's largest robot competition," in SF June 12-14 - Boing Boing
The annual DIY robotics event is just a week away. Anyone can participate -- and that means you.

This years attendees come from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Russia, South Korea, UK, and the United States. Can the UK's 5-time gold medalist "Ziggy" retain it's lead for an amazing 6th year? Will Brazil finally sweep the combat classes? Can Team USA regain the top spot in humanoid soccer, having lost a heartbreaking defeat to Austria?

The event will host over 70 different competitions, including 18 different events just for walking humanoids. Large scale combat robots will fight to the death behind bulletproof glass, thrilling the crowd with crashing, smashing, flame-throwing, and miscellaneous wanton destruction. The combat robots, weighing as much as 340 pounds, are what draws most people to the event, but many stay for the AI based sumo robots, soccer bots, and kinetic art that fills out the venue.

But that's not all - other events include kung-fu humanoids, hockey bots, fire fighting competitions, autonomous explorer bots (like the Mars Rovers!), art bots, bartending robots, and mechanical marvels that defy description! The newest event is "Mech Warfare." Humanoid robots with bb cannons and rockets with try to take each other down, while the pilots control them remotely via in-robot cameras, with no look at the field from above.

Robogames: Friday-Sunday, June 12-14, 2009, Fort Mason, San Francisco. Kids under 7 get in free, tickets for everyone else range from $15-20 per day. I've witnessed their events before, and the Robogames folks always put on an amazing show. Well worth the modest ticket price.

Featured Photographer - Amaren Colosi

Whether behind the lens or face to face, photographer Amaren Colosi is a people person. She began taking portraits at five years old with her mother's old Canon, and though her aim didn't quite match her enthusiasm (even when he graciously kneeled down to be at her level, she always managed to cut off her dad's head), it was the beginning of an ongoing learning process that she believes is at the core of creating art.

Amaren honed her passion in high school and earned her BFA in photography from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Since moving to Portland, she has found the city's friendly accessibility the perfect complement to her work. She loves to capture the quirky energy and creativity of the people, activities, food, and architecture here, using vibrant colors and texture to bring an image to life.

People are still Amaren's favorite subject as the photos become an instant collaboration. Her portraits often reflect real personalities in candid moments or unexpected settings. She's inspired by all the ways people enjoy their life in the Northwest; whether it's fine dining in a sleek, modern restaurant, skateboarding around old warehouses, or laughing on a wild hillside surrounded by elk, she focuses on light, depth perception, and contrast in her compositions. She regularly uses a Canon 30D with a 50mm lens and a Lumedyne battery-powered strobe.

Amaren's work has appeared in PDX Magazine, the Oregonian, LivePDX.com, and the Portland Art Museum member magazine, has been shown at Nemo Design and various local coffee shops, and is available as stock imagery at Viewfinders NW (http://viewfindersnw.com/photographer/Amaren-Colosi). She also sells her multimedia Polaroid art at First Thursday in the Pearl and Last Thursday on Alberta.
