She received her formal schooling from UC Santa Cruz and The Rocky Mountain School of Photography.

MobiQpons

MobiQpons: Hyperlocal Mobile Coupons for iPhones
Name: MobiQpons

Quick Pitch: MobiQpons delivers location based shopping coupons nationwide while enabling businesses to easily reach their target customers with significant cost savings.

Genius Idea: We’re really stoked about Coupious’ approach to providing mobile location-aware coupons. In the fact, the only issue we saw was that it was only available to a small group of beta testers in Indiana. MobiQpons, a competitor also tackling mobile coupons, is able to meet our right here, right now needs with their free iPhone app (BlackBerry and Android (Android reviews) coming soon) that provides digital, location-based coupons to all.

Just like with Coupious, MobiQpon users can whip out their phone, launch the application, and get served with a list of nearby discounts for stores, restaurants, and services. The cashing-in process is also identical, so all you need to do is locate the appropriate coupon, and show it to the cashier, who will then enter or scan the barcode.

Featured Photographer - Kacey Baxter

This week we feature Portland Oregon Photographer Kacey Baxter of Acorn Studios.

Kacey’s love and appreciation of photography started at a very young age—seven to be exact. Through a school camera club, she began to experiment with photography using a homemade pin-hole camera and a Kodak Ektralite 500.

While the photography seed was planted early in life, Kacey didn’t really cultivate her interest until her teen years. Thanks to the encouragement and support of a mentor named Sweet Ol’ Bill, Kacey was able to begin honing her skills and finding her style.

Kacey’s entrance into the world of wedding photography happened quite unexpectedly. Still in high school, an emergency led Kacey to cover one of her mentor’s booked weddings. The experience proved very rewarding as she gained exposure a new style of photography. Shortly after, Kacey’s mother began a photography business and throughout college Kacey assisted on weddings and portrait shoots.

A bit older, and a lot more experienced, Kacey is always striving to perfect her craft. Through years of experimentation and learning from others, she has discovered that her style is natural and unscripted. She recognizes that each shoot is as unique as her clients and that the best photos often come out of unplanned moments. Whether it’s a portrait session or a wedding, her goal always is to find the story and capture it as it unfolds.

Kacey uses a wide variety of cameras. A large number of the photos on her web site were taken with a Canon 40D, however she has been known to shoot with everything from her old Cannon AE-1 to her iPhone. Her "go to" lens is the Cannon 28-135mm because as it fits most of her needs while traveling, but also loves her Cannon 50mm f1.4 for its artistic freedom, especially in portraits.

Uglified Camera

Here is a great post from Boing Boing about how a traveler "uglified" his camera to make it theft-resistant on his journey.

Recommendations Gadget from Google Friend Connect

Google Friend Connect Adds Recommendations Gadget - washingtonpost.com
Publishers can create the gadget on Google Friend Connect's site and then embed the code into their sites. Once the gadget is embedded, members can then recommend the content they like, anything from a whole page to a single photo by clicking a "recommend it" button that accompanies any piece of content on the site. It's useful for both publishers and visitors, because they can easily see what parts of a site are the most popular. The items with the most votes will rise to the top of the list within the gadget, making it easier for others to find those features even if they are buried deep within a site. Website owners can also see which members have recommended a given item and learn more about them.

Featured Photographer - Dave Beckerman

Today we are featuring New York photographer Dave Beckerman. Dave specializes in stunning black & white photography and has spent the last 20 years honing his craft.

Excerps from: http://www.beckermanphoto.com/faq-2/about-dave-beckermanself portrait

"Part of what propelled me back into photography (after my programming stint) was the
realization that a properly mounted and framed photograph was a finished product; and that there was a good chance that I would get more satisfaction from this bit of art then weeks or years of managing programmers or compromising on movie scripts."

"I had my first darkroom when I was fifteen. I think that I was introduced to photography at a community center in the Bronx, but I’m not sure. I am now middle-aged. About 20 years ago I began to work seriously at photography."

"I have only done black and white photography, trying to capture those little ordinary moments of city life that are extraordinary without either denigrating or glorifying people. I still shoot carefully composed shots on a tripod once in a while."

"I have taken great pictures with a $90 Canonet (had one of the sharpest lenses I ever owned) and lousy pictures with more expensive equipment. After many years I’ve come to the conclusion that, yes the equipment is important, but it’s only a tool."

Published in New York Spaces Magazine
Dave currently uses a Canon 40D with Sigma 30mm f1.4 for most of his shooting. Other lenses, Canon 50mm f1.4 and Canon 20mm f2.8, but changes his equipment fairly regularly. He also does a fair amount of infrared photography with a camera that was modified by LifePixel.com, the Canon 450 xt. He uses Adobe Lightroom for most of the processing, and prints with an print with the Epson 4800 and Epson 7800 on Crane Museo Silver Rag, and Epson "F" Gloss Exhibition paper.

WiGig Working Towards New Wireless Technology

Major technology companies including Microsoft, Intel and Nokia have formed an alliance to develop a new, high-speed wireless technology for PCs and consumer electronics.

The Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) Alliance, which was launched on Thursday, also numbers Dell, LG, Panasonic and Samsung among its members. The industry group is developing a technology that operates on 60GHz, which is unlicensed spectrum, to deliver high transfer speeds.

"The widespread availability and use of digital multimedia content has created an ever-increasing need for faster wireless connectivity that current wireless standards cannot support," the companies said in a statement. "This has fuelled demand for a single technology that can support instantaneous file transfers, wireless display and docking, and streaming high-definition media on a variety of devices."
